The Best Toilet to Install When You’re Remodeling Your Home

As some of you may know, Jozef and I have been remodeling our home. We have searched high and low for the best way to do it, so I’m going to share some of what we have learned here with you all. Among other things, I’m going to talk about the best toilet to install when you’re remodeling your home. Yes, among all of the other stuff you have to worry about, this is also a really big problem for almost everyone who has ever had to deal with this stuff.

You don’t really think about issues like that until they actually come up, at which point you wonder why you didn’t think of them earlier. The thing is, there really is no better time to actually install a new toilet. You don’t really want to have the same toilet forever. Not only do toilets really not last forever, but they have better toilets now. They have toilets that are easier to clean, that waste less water, and that are basically just nicer for people to look at, and who wouldn’t want that?

You wouldn’t have thought that people were ever going to make any real advances when it came to toilets, but they did, and now our old toilet is outdated. Yours probably is too, and if you’re remodeling your house, you might as well get a new toilet now. We bought a toilet that was designed to be a water-saver. We were also able to get a low profile toilet. This is great, because this means that the toilet isn’t going to completely dominate the room in the way that a lot of other toilets do, and that makes the whole bathroom look better.

Toilets are never going to be really nice to look at, but they can at least be installed in a way that isn’t going to completely dominate the room. That’s the look that’s in all of the magazines these days, and that’s the one that I recommend for the people who are really into the way that nice and clean bathrooms look. That’s what you can get if you end up upgrading your toilets at the right time, and that’s really what I recommend.

One of the reasons that Jozef and I decided to remodel in the first place was that we knew that we’d be here for a while, but that we also didn’t think that we were going to live in the house forever. We knew that we were going to have to really make the most of our house, but eventually the housing market is going to get better, and we want to be able to sell our house for way more than the amount that we spent on purchasing. With a great new efficient toilet that saves on water in a prettier bathroom that almost all others before the 2010’s, we’re halfway there, so below you’ll learn about our bathroom renovation ideas.

You should know that using the bathroom or pretty much anything else like that when you’re remodeling your home is pretty annoying. You’re going to have to go through some points where you don’t have any plumbing at all. You’re also probably going to have to cross some barely finished rooms on your way to the bathroom and to and from the shower every time. It’s not the best time, but you already knew that when you started remodeling your house.

If you’re going to be without plumbing for too long, I really recommend getting a composting toilet. I know, it sounds awful, and it sounds like something that people would associate with hippies. Well, the hippies are onto something. Lots of people who are remodeling and who are going to be without plumbing for a while are just going to get Porta Potties instead. Porta Potties are an abomination, as we all know, but we live with them when we’re at rock concerts.

Composting toilets are so much better than Porta Potties it’s not even funny. It’s really easy to install them, and you’re not going to need any plumbing. You’re going to need some electricity for some of them, but there are also versions that don’t use electricity, and these are the ones that you might need if you’re running new electricity and doing that kind of thing with your house when you’re remodeling. I seriously thought that our composting toilet was a life-saver.

You’re not going to need to spend a lot of money on composting toilets, which is great for the people who have considered dealing with the costs of a Porta Potty rental. You just need to make sure that you’re able to take out the trash when necessary, and you’re definitely fine. The waterless versions are designed using a vacuum so they’re not going to really smell, and that’s going to make a big difference. Your property is going to be full of all sorts of lovely scents when you’re in the process of remodeling your house, and that’s only going to get tougher when you’re deciding on the Porta Potty rental.

If you’re like us and currently or planning to renovate your bathroom, we recommend You can even find a good camping toilet from there. Do check it out!

So Here’s What I’ve Learned About Hardwood Floors

“Here is more info that Jozef and I have learned about choosing hardwoods for our remodeling process. Hope It’s helpful for you all!”

Customers in the market for an excellent floor covering in their homes, should look no further than hardwood flooring. Hardwood flooring will provide the homeowner looking to remodel, decades of exceptional beauty and durability. Indeed hardwood flooring is a time honored favorite on “This Old House”.

It does not matter whether the homeowner is deciding on whether to add hardwood flooring to a new home, or in the market to replace the hardwood flooring, the existing varieties of hardwood flooring will make that choice relatively easy. The toughness of white oak, for example is perfect for areas that see a lot of traffic, such as entrance way. Hardwood flooring comes in a variety of species which include, but are not limited to:

White Oak

Hardwood flooring also comes in varying widths. Strip flooring is classified as floor strips that are less than 3″ wide. This is the type of flooring that will give the room a long, and linear look. Plank flooring includes widths that are greater than 3″. If unfinished wood flooring is chosen, the installer will sand and apply the stain on the job. Solid and Engineered wood flooring are floors that are composed of multiple layers of wood or wood composite veneers. The benefit of using the engineered flooring, is that it can be placed where the practicality of standard strip flooring could not be used, such as over concrete, radiant floor heating systems and in basements.

Hardwood floor installation costs vary, from $1.50 to $8.00 per square foot. The factors that affect the price include: Wood thickness, species, and grade of wood. Pre-finished, solid engineered wood floors are able to be installed by the owner of the home. However, if the decision is made to hire a professional installer, include an extra $2.00 per square foot, minimum.

As far as durability goes, hardwood flooring can last between 10 and 30 years. Many solid engineered hardwood floors come with a 50 year warranty. However, with proper care and nurturing, hardwood floors can last twice that long.

The main factor in the life of hardwood flooring is the care it receives. Like all flooring, hardwood floors need to be cleaned and maintained. Abrasive dirt will eat away at the finish and increase the wear so vacuuming is a must. It is also a good idea to lay mats, runners or small rugs on entrance ways or areas with much traffic, such as hallways. Hardwood flooring can be installed in almost any environment. The exception being rooms that have excessive humidity or areas that are prone to flooding, such as basements.

Once the decision to purchase a hardwood floor has been made, it’s time to consider the location of the flooring as well as what type of surface the hardwood floor will be laid on. Hardwood flooring comes with a ‘hardness scale’, also known as the Janka Scale. For high traffic areas, maple, oak, cherry and ash would be good choices. For example, areas such as the kitchen or foyer, choose a tougher, harder species of wood, such as oak. Bedrooms, dens and home offices are well suited for a softer wood, such as pine or black walnut. Basements have to be considered for their high humidity and propensity to flood. Engineered woods are the best choice in this case. For the bathroom, it’s best to leave wood out of the equation and go with tile instead, due to the humidity and water from tubs and showers.

Another consideration before purchasing a wood floor, is the surface it will be applied over. The plywood subfloor works well as a subfloor. Installers will judge the condition, and make sure it is solid and flat. Next, install any type of nail or glue-down hardwood, click together strips, engineered wood, cork or planking. Installation over an existing hardwood floor requires that thinner boards, or solid/engineered hardwood flooring. If the subfloor is concrete or tile, nails will not be able to be used, so the best option would be a click together floating floor, or one that can be glued in place. Lastly, if the subfloor is a radiant floor, choose engineered hardwood flooring. This choice works best as it’s thinner and offers increased stability.

Hardwood floors as an exceptional flooring choice for home or office. They are durable, require minimal maintenance, and environmentally sustainable. Hardwood floors are an absolutely perfect choice for most living environments.

How to Look Great in Photographs

photograph-01We all want to look good in photographs. However, there are those of us that do not feel confident in having our photos taken, as we dislike the end results. There are a few tried and true steps to take to accentuate your appearance before the camera takes the shot. Before we consider these, it may be wise to look into why we feel we do not take a good photo. Take out some photos of yourself, or visit a social media page where you have selfies. Take a close look and note what make you look better in one photo and not the other. Things to consider are: Lighting, making ‘faces’, the angle of the shot.

Suck it In

As crude as that sounds, it’s what many of us tend to dislike most about our photos: The protruding tummy. If the standard sucking your stomach in is not working for you, try posing by facing the camera, then twisting your waist away, leaving one shoulder behind and one facing the camera. According to Patti Wood, a body language expert based out of Atlanta, this pose “makes you look very slender”.

The Right Lip Color

With you eyes defined nicely, a nicely toned matte finish foundation applied, the next consideration are the lips. One color that is said to flatter almost all skin complexions is one with a berry tone. Mimi Dorsey is an L.A. based image consultant who advises her clientele to use lip colors with berry tones. She also suggests that you avoid nude lipsticks as they can give you a dead appearance in the final photograph.

Take it Easy on the Refreshments

No matter how you cut it, that second glass of wine, or third can of beer has a tendency to cause your eyelids to sag, just a bit, according to Troy Jensen, makeup artist. Adding the flash of the camera, adds to the punishment of the crime. So make sure that those photos of get togethers are taken before you’ve enjoyed a few.

Natural is Best for Hair Styles

Watching Sleepless in Seattle, you can see how lovely Meg Ryan’s hair is when it moves. Indeed, hair that is not overly sprayed or styled often looks better on camera. According to NYC stylist David Evangelista, “You really don’t want your do to look sprayed or crunchy.”

Let the Camera Do It’s Job

If you are taking photos of yourself for a blog or portfolio, it pays to get the best camera you can afford. LA celebrity photographer Jack Guy, says that you can purchase an adequate camera that will do it’s job at a reasonable price that will not be complex to operate. Mr. Guy uses the Canon G series for his photos.

Push the Neck Forward

Anyone out there that has the ever dreaded double chin knows how difficult it is to obtain a pleasing photograph. Mimi Dorsey advises folks to face the camera and extend your face forward, just a bit. This thins out the face and reduces the double chin.

From Dusk til Dawn

For natural lighting that is flattering and also comfortable, skip the afternoon pics and instead think of having your photo shoot at dusk. According to Jack Guy, due to the position of the setting sun, you have no shadows across the face, therefore, eliminate under eye shadows, which contribute to a much younger look.

Try a Matte Foundation

Having a soft, gentle glow to the skin is flattering. However, an oily, greasy or shiny look can ruin a good photo. Troy Jensen suggests the use of a matte product, such as a matte foundation or finishing powder. The finishing powder works well, as it does not lay heavy and thick on your skin.

There you have it, some essentials in taking the perfect photograph.
